A Gothic Cozy Fantasy With Tentacles? Count Me In!
Alright my fellow spicy book dragons, where are my monster lovers at?
If you've been enjoying the Cambric Creek series, then Two for Tea: Welcome to Azathe is another wonderfully unique addition that proves C.M. Nascosta can make just about any monster romance work. This fourth installment trades minotaurs, mothmen, and werewolves for something even more unusual: a romance between a young witch and an ancient shadow creature. And yes... there are tentacles.
This series continues to impress me with how every book feels completely different while still keeping the same cozy atmosphere, lovable community, and signature blend of wholesome romance and scorching spice.
Meet the Couple
Harper (FMC): A sarcastic, book-loving young witch who struggles with clinical depression, anxiety, and years of believing she isn't good enough. After losing her father, she returns to Cambric Creek with her family but feels like an outsider among her mother's ambitious coven. She's witty, relatable, and easy to root for as she slowly begins rebuilding her life.
Azathe (MMC): An ancient shadow being who quietly watches over others from the space between worlds. Wise, patient, mysterious, and surprisingly gentle, Azathe becomes exactly the steady presence Harper needs. Since shadow folk don't have a permanent physical form, let's just say they have... a lot of creative options once the romance heats up.
My Favorite Part: The Atmosphere
More than anything, this book completely sold me on its setting.
Azathe's tea shop feels like somewhere I'd happily spend an entire afternoon. Imagine stepping into a cozy gothic café filled with towering bookshelves, grimoires, tarot tables, dried flowers, pinned butterflies, fresh pastries, phantom tea carts, and a grumpy cat showing customers to their tables. It feels like an English garden collided with a witch's library, and I absolutely loved every minute spent there. It is easily one of my favorite locations in the entire Cambric Creek series.
More Than Just a Romance
While this book definitely delivers the spice, it also surprised me with how thoughtfully it handles Harper's mental health. Her depression and anxiety aren't magically fixed overnight. Instead, the story follows her gradual journey toward healing as she finds support, discovers new friendships, begins exploring her magic again, and slowly starts believing in herself.
Watching Harper grow more confident while falling for Azathe made their relationship feel genuine and rewarding.
Their romance is a true slow burn. Harper initially can't even see Azathe, only hear his deep, comforting voice. Their conversations become something she looks forward to every day, and watching that emotional connection develop before the relationship turns physical made the payoff even sweeter.
Then, of course, C.M. Nascosta reminds you exactly what kind of series you're reading. Let's just say the spicy scenes are... memorable. If you've ever wondered what happens when your love interest can reshape their body however they please, this book happily answers that question.
The Verdict
Highly Recommended For: Fans of cozy fantasy, monster romance, gothic aesthetics, emotional healing stories, unique world-building, and readers looking for one of the most original romance pairings you'll ever encounter.
I will admit I felt the ending wrapped up a little quicker than I expected. The romance gets its Happily Ever After, but I found myself wanting just a little more time with these characters before saying goodbye.
That said, I was happy to discover that several familiar faces continue appearing in C.M. Nascosta's Wheel of the Year series. It's currently sitting on my TBR, and I'm excited to dive back into this world. Plus, if you've read this book, you'll probably be just as amused as I was to learn that "fucking Ilea" remains a recurring sentiment.
Overall, this was another fantastic entry in the Cambric Creek series. Cozy, heartfelt, wonderfully weird, emotionally satisfying, and spicy enough to have you fanning your face. If you're looking for something completely different in the monster romance genre, this one is absolutely worth picking up.
