The series follows six Alpha leaders from neighboring wolf territories who form an alliance after a ruthless Alpha named Xavier begins conquering surrounding packs in his quest to dominate North America. While each book follows a different couple and delivers its own happily ever after, the overarching war against the Shadow Pack continues throughout the series, ending each installment with just enough of a cliffhanger to make you reach for the next book immediately.
If you enjoy interconnected romance series, this one does it really well. There are also two standalone novels set in the same universe, Broken Bonds and The Denver Alpha, for readers who want even more time in this world.
Meet the Couple
Fallon (FMC): Confident, stubborn, fearless, and just reckless enough to keep everyone on their toes. She has dreamed of joining the elite Security Squad ever since they visited her high school, and once she sets her sights on a goal, nothing is going to stop her from chasing it.
Gray (MMC): The Alpha of the Goldenleaf Pack and commander of the Security Squad. Gray was forced into leadership at just eighteen years old after a devastating Shadow Pack attack claimed the lives of his parents and much of his pack. Serious, protective, and fiercely devoted to those under his care, Gray has spent years putting duty before everything else.
What I Loved
One of my favorite things about this book was the setting.
Instead of jumping straight into the romance, C.J. Primer throws readers into an intense six-week training program where recruits are pushed physically and mentally to prove they're worthy of joining the Security Squad. Between endurance training, hand-to-hand combat, night patrols, and tactical exercises, the story almost feels like a paranormal military academy, and I loved every minute of it.
Fallon is exactly the kind of heroine I enjoy reading.
She's stubborn enough to challenge an Alpha without thinking twice, even when it gets her into trouble. Her fiery personality leads to plenty of entertaining moments, especially when she accidentally earns the entire group extra laps on the very first day of training. Her friend's comment, "You just had to pull a Fallon, didn't you?" had me laughing because it perfectly sums up her personality.
Then there's Gray.
At first he comes across as cold and intimidating, but it's obvious there's much more going on beneath the surface. Watching him struggle between maintaining professionalism and protecting Fallon made their romance feel believable. Every time he tried to keep his distance, his Alpha instincts had other plans.
One moment that really stood out was when Fallon's training partner accidentally broke her wrist during sparring. Gray's protective side immediately took over, and while Fallon was being treated, he made sure her partner got a very painful reminder to be more careful. It was one of those moments that made me smile because actions spoke much louder than words.
The chemistry between Fallon and Gray builds slowly throughout the training, making every stolen moment together feel earned. Whether they're arguing during training exercises, or trying to ignore the attraction between them, the tension keeps building until neither of them can pretend anymore.
I also loved the addition of the war games. Watching the recruits compete in capture-the-flag-style challenges added another layer of excitement to the story and gave every character a chance to shine. The training never felt repetitive because there was always another challenge waiting around the corner.
Of course, the romance isn't the only thing happening. The mysterious rogue attacks, political tensions between the packs, and the looming threat of the Shadow Pack all help build an overarching story that stretches beyond this single book. It kept me invested not only in Fallon and Gray's relationship, but also in the future of the entire Six-Pack Alliance.
The Verdict
If you're a fan of wolf shifter romances with strong heroines, protective Alphas, action-packed training, forbidden romance, and an interconnected world that keeps growing with every book, I highly recommend Alpha Gray.
This was a fantastic introduction to the series. I loved Fallon and Gray together, the world-building was easy to get invested in, and the ending left me eager to find out what happens next. While Fallon and Gray's story reaches a satisfying happily ever after, the larger storyline definitely had me reaching for book two.
